Visit Thailand For a Vacation of a Lifetime!

The post Visit Thailand For a Vacation of a Lifetime! appeared first on Footloose.

Thailand is one of the top Asian tourist destinations and not without reason. While most visit Thailand for its famed beaches and party-scene, the country is so much more than just a backpacker’s destination. The lure of Thailand was best captured by Alex Garland in his bestseller The Beach. It was later made into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Thailand has something to offer for every type of interest and budget. In terms of things to do, the country can be more or less categorized into three parts. Read on to find out what draws so many tourists to visit Thailand every year.

 Bangkok and Kanchanaburi

Visit Thailand - Bangkok

Visit Thailand – Bangkok

Bangkok is almost legendary for its nightlife and thriving pulse. The city appears not to sleep at all. While there are a mind boggling variety of things to do and see in Bangkok, most tourist itineraries invariably include the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. The latter is the temple of the Emerald Buddha, and possibly one of the most sacred sites in Thailand. If you have time in Bangkok there are a lot of famous neighbourhoods you can visit, each with its own distinctive vibe and personality, like Soi Cowboy, Khao San Road, and Chinatown. A good way to bring an end to your trip in a city is with a river cruise with dinner, and Bangkok is no exception. After a hectic day about town, unwind and relax with the Princess Dinner Cruise in the river Chao Phraya, one of the major rivers in Bangkok.

A short distance from Bangkok, about a couple of hours away on road, is Kanchanaburi. Thailand was the only South East Asian country never to have been colonized and the Thai are understandably proud of the fact. Nevertheless, Kanchanaburi is the site of the famous Bridge on the River Kwai, immortalised in the film by the same name. It is the bridge that Allied PoW built during WWII over which plied the “Death Railway.” For the price of a tourist ticket, you can ride the train and also get a certificate for it as a souvenir.

Inland Forests and National Parks

Visit Thailand - Chiang Mai

Most people who want to visit Thailand have heard of the famous beach destinations like Phuket and Pattaya but not many have heard of the treasures in the northern reaches of Thailand. The most interesting of them is Chiang Mai. It has a significant tribal population, and you can live for a few days in a homestay in the villages to learn more about the local culture.

It is also close to the Elephant National Park, a sanctuary for rescued animals that are no longer engaged in any commercial activities, so it’s a great place for an animal lover.

Another significant attraction in Chiang Mai is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of Thailand’s oldest temples. It’s a bit of a climb but the views from the top of the Ping Valley are great and worth the exercise.

Beaches and Islands

Visit Thailand - Phuket

This is the bit that’s the biggest attraction for anyone wanting to visit Thailand, and rightly so. Although commercialization and intensive development have ensured that the beaches are no longer as pristine as they used to be, they still retain a lot of personality.

The famous ones are Pattaya, Phuket and Ko Samui of course. But if you want to get away from the throngs of tourists, then Ko Phi Phi is a true island paradise. This was where the film Beach was shot. If you are down south near Phuket, then Ko Chang is another beach destination with a great backpackers’ vibe.
